"I NEED 14 VIDEOS FOR YESTERDAY"
Those could have been the last words my ears heard. It was a new kind of project in my animation studio, Polidélico, comprised of only me and an animator ally. A big challenged awaited us, and we survived. This is how Tania González and I made one video every two weeks.
It all started with a style guide
This was the first time I worked on a production so big, where I even had to manage the making of both the voice over and the sound design, which I outsourced and recorded on a local studio. That was the easy part. If we were going to make 14 videos by ourselves, we had to have a process that could deliver a good video and storytelling, but one that allowed us to be fast as possible.
As the client herself said: "We learn as we go"
At first it's all rough lines
Every chapter was made in 22 scene cuts, sometimes more. In total, I sketched almost 300 scenes!
Then, all it takes is ninja fast animation and illustration
In one week, I illustrated an entire chapter. While I worked in the backgrounds, the characters were created by Tania. Then, we divided the work in two parts. Tania animated the characters, and I did all the compositing, background animation and visual fx.
And two weeks later, a video is born.
Depression
This is an example of a chapter intended for high schoolers.
THE SECRET IS TWO
Without collaboration this project wouldn't have been possible. As a freelancer that is used to work solo, the making of these videos gave me insights all around the place. Each second was learning. With the help of a tremendous voice actress and a brilliant sound designer, I added to the mix the garnish that it needed to be called a complete animation.
